20 Kilograms of Red Hot Steel vs Frozen Lake

BeyondThePress, the Finnish YouTube channel that brings us some of the most creative, if sometimes a bit silly, content we’ve ever seen, has found another way to keep our attention on something we never realized we cared about.

The pair of Finns have heated up a 20 kilogram weight until it’s glowing hot, then set it on the ice of a frozen lake. The ice is several inches thick, and the premise is to see if the weight will hold enough heat to allow it to plunge all the way though the ice to the chilly waters below. At first, it looks like the chunk of metal will take no time to pierce the ice sheet, but the farther in it goes, the slower the progress becomes.

Eventually, when the water covers the top of the weight, the progress stops, leaving the wight embedded just short of reaching open water. Of course, never satisfied with well enough, the BTP creators decided to give the weight some help, dropping it a few times against the remaining ice until it does crack through and plummet to a watery grave, taking the hook handle used to retrieve it along for the ride!
