Tesla May Have Stiff Competition With the Porsche Mission E

We all know that concept cars may or may not make it to production and if they do, they are often drastically different than when we are first introduced to them on the auto show circuit. However, if Porsche does deliver the Mission E to dealerships in as we see it here, Tesla will definitely be looking at a new contender in the electric car arena.

While Porsche will not be switching its entire lineup to all-electric, the Mission E is certainly a direct contender for Tesla’s highly popular Model S and, if the specs alone are any indicator, Tesla better be ready to step up or lose some of its stranglehold on the all-battery powered market.

With a look that’s a, yet decidedly fresh and modern, the Mission E certainly looks the part of an all-electric ride. The hood and nose retain much of the shape that the automaker has used on all of it’s vehicles for decades now, but a clean new headlight cluster modernizes the front end in a subtle, but obvious update. The side profile is a bit more typical of a sedan, but the rounded roofline also works to retain that traditional Porsche profile.

Under the hood – figuratively speaking, of course – the Mission E boasts some impressive power and range, offering a top speed of 240 km/h (150 MPH) and almost 500 km (310 miles) on a single charge. It also has one of the cooler safety features I’ve personally ever seen. Instead of mirrors, the car has cameras that project an image into the inside of the windshield, helping eliminate blind spots and keeping everybody safer.

All of this, wrapped in a great looking package for the surprisingly reasonable price of $85,000 means Porsche is going after the electric car market, so Tesla better be ready for what’s headed their way.
