600hp LSx Turbo Chevy Monza Dyno | 5.3L With a 80mm Turbo |
Chevy’s Monza wasn’t exactly the most iconic car in the history of the company, but it has built a bit of a cult following like many off-beat models throughout the decades. While it was relatively mundane in stock form, there are a couple of versions that have been adopted as one of the more sought-after platforms for drag cars.
This isn’t one of them.
However, there’s no denying this particular Monza carries a little swagger in its step, thanks in large part to the great looking wheel and tire combination that definitely lends the ride an aggressive look that’s obvious from a mile away. However, it’s what lies under the hood that really makes this vintage Chevy stand out from the crowd.
Gone is the stock engine – almost certainly an inline four cylinder – and in it’s place lies the swap of choice for most of the modern world, an LS powerplant. This particular engine is a stock bottom end 5.3 liter pull-out that, in stock form, would be good for around 340 horsepower at the crank, or approximately 280 to the rear wheels. However, if it was just a stock 5.3, we probably wouldn’t be sharing it.
Bolted to the outgoing air and gas collectors is an 80mm turbocharger that crams the intake full of pressurized are, to the tune of around 20 PSI, which allows the car to crank out well over 600 horsepower to the wheels with the buttery smooth, Kansas-flat torque curve the LS engine is known for.
The car isn’t quite track ready, but with the addition of a 2-step, should be set to tear up the track in no time to see what kind of number it can put up. Until then, we’ll just have to enjoy the dyno video and the cool fireballs the car pops off on the rollers.
