Is The World’s “Most Powerful” Supercar Is Fake?
I haven’t been quite so bold as to just come right out and say the Devel Sixteen is fake, but I’ve had my doubts ever since the first iteration rolled into the social media realm back in 2013. Making some pretty insane claims – most notably that the car makes 5,000 horsepower and is capable of top speeds of 500 MPH – put Devel on map for sure, but it seems they’ve had a real hard time actually getting the car into production for whatever reason.
It would seem I’m not the only one who has doubts about the authenticity of the claims made by the company. YouTuber Eric Robi from the RevMatchTV channel also noticed some the red flags surrounding the hypercar, such as the fact that after five years, we still haven’t even seen video of the car driving at speed, only a couple of obscure clips of the concept car idling around.
What we do know is legit is the engine. Steve Morris wouldn’t allow his name to be attached to something if he hadn’t at least done his part to push it forward. Looking at the engine itself, it’s clear there’s been a ton of time and money poured into bringing the V16 to life, including the massive billet block that was designed and produced just for this car. Footage of the quad-turbocharged beast on the dyno certainly appear to validate the claims that it’s capable of 5,000 horsepower although best I can remember, the dyno itself doesn’t actually read that high. However, the engine itself does exist and maxed out the dyno, so there’s a ton of power there.
In all honesty, that’s about all we have in the way of validation. The concept cars we’ve seen have never been driven at anything above an idle, if that, and one of those clips, featuring social media sensation SupercarBlondie, was blasted for having a fake sound clip of the car cranking up.
I guess time will tell if Devel is going to see this project through or if they’ve just been blowing smoke. I think we know where I stand on the matter, but I’m always willing to give the benefit of the doubt.
