For those of us who have been alive for long enough to witness the last decade or two of trucks, I think that most will agree that this is one segment that has taken a drastic swing in what the customers expect. It might have taken a couple of generations of pick up, however, we fast forward to the year 2019 and trucks are no longer being used for the sole purpose of workhorse. Instead, consumers who find themselves in the market for a new truck will be shopping for a vehicle that can range anywhere from a basic bare-bones machine that keeps this workhorse lineage, all the way to something that may even compete with the likes of a variety of luxury cars these days.
One of the latest beasts in the heavy duty truck market to pull the cover off of exactly what can be expected is the 2019 Ram 3500 HD. Over the past couple of days in Detroit, we have gotten details on a lot of vehicles that have come to light and this is one that definitely is exciting for those interested in the segment.
On tap for those considering picking up this heavy-duty monster machine is going to be the Cummins series that we have all come to know and love. With 6.7 L of in-line six-cylinder power, the truck will be ready for all of your towing needs, promising that it will be able to shoulder the to a capacity of 35,100 pounds with 1000 lb-ft of torque on tap along with 400 horsepower. I’m not sure how many people will ever need to pull that much, but if you have big ideas in mind, this might be the one for you. We’re told that if you don’t need all of that a less powerful version of the diesel engine will be available that kicks the numbers down to 370hp/850 lb-ft or a 6.4L Hemi v8 that promises 410hp/429lb-ft. All variants come with optional 4-wheel-drive.
Some of the cooler features are an air suspension that will be able to be used to lower the truck down to hook up to a trailer and a 12-inch infotainment screen within. Otherwise, the interior does share a great amount of lineage with the light-duty trucks.
In the scheme of things, the 2019 Ram is going to be providing a barrage of muscle and it’s all going to be wrapped up in a leather glove. If buyers choose to go the route of luxury, it seems as if the truck will provide the best of both worlds but it can still be had as a basic work truck as well!
