Drag Racing Icon and Six Time World Champion Jeg Coughlin Jr. Announces 2020 Will Be His Last Full Season
Chances are if you love motorsports at all you know who the Coughlins are. If you don’t recognize the name you will probably recognize the bright yellow logo. JEGS, one of the biggest and most important brands in drag racing since 1960 when Jeg Sr. Founded the company in a garage.
Since then the family has won more races than almost every other family in racing. They’ve compiled hundreds of national, divisional, and local race wins. This includes 7 NHRA National Championships with 15 divisional championships.
Of those Championships Jeg Coughlin Jr. has won 5 of the 7 in the Pro Stock category he’s been racing. I could sit here and talk about all of his accolades and wins for days at a time. Coughlin is the only driver to win from all 16 qualifying positions. He won “Rookie of the year” in 1998 and is the only person to ever win in 7 eliminator classes.
This weekend Coughlin announced that he would be retiring from full-time competition stating that he would like to take time to be with family and work on the family business.
Now we know he won’t be retired fully, a competitor like Jeg will always want to compete. He left the door open to return in select Pro stock races in the future and is a bracket racer at heart.
