Car Runs For 100 Years Without Refueling – The Thorium Car
Many far-fetched concepts for alternatively powering vehicles have come and gone, while the vast majority of cars on the road still rely on good ol’ gasoline to get you where you’re going. There have been some great advancements that have made electric vehicles viable options, and they’ve certainly taken off better than in the past, but we still depend heavily on internal-combustion despite the obvious drawbacks.
Perhaps a real change could be on the horizon with the Thorium Car. Thorium is a radioactive metal that contains the potential energy output of over 7,000 gallons of gas in a single ounce. The thorium would be used to heat water, which would create steam, which would in turn power a turbine, providing clean, safe energy for up to 100 years with just 8 ounces of the substance.
While thorium is radioactive and would have some dangers associated with it’s handling, it cannot be used to make weapons like uranium can, making it less attractive to those with less scrupulous intentions. The concept is just that, a concept, but the buzz around the idea is growing and hopefully progress can be made on this potential energy supply.
