Casting a Ships Gigantic Propeller at 1,800°F is Mesmerizing
Crafting a prop for a massive ship might seem like a fairly straightforward process in which you take metal and mend it into a shape that would allow for the ship to be propelled forward. It doesn’t really seem like there is much thought beyond that but, in reality, as you might imagine, things aren’t exactly as they seem.
When it comes to a piece of metal that supposed to propel a vessel to 124 million miles, give or take a couple over its lifespan, there are many factors to consider on a piece of equipment that will travel the same distance as there is from Earth to the moon a total of five times!
Check out the video below that takes you inside of the production process that lets you witness everything from the way that the metal is contained in the mold all the way to how the propeller must be carefully removed from the mold and polished to make a clean single piece product.
