Clint Bowyer Wins STP 500 at Martinsville Motor Speedway
For the first time since 2012, Clint Bowyer found his way to victory lane! 190 races after he last won he pulled it off, driving for Stewart-Haas racing, in the bosses old car, a car which won a NASCAR Championship just a few short years ago. Bowyer has the third longest streak between victories in NASCAR history behind last year’s series champion, Martin Truex Jr. (219 races between victories), and hall of famer Bill Elliott (227 races between victories)
Bowyer did so after the race in Martinsville, Virginia was postponed due to snow storms on Saturday, and Sunday forcing the the race to be ran on Monday, something that had not been done since 2010. He did so by leading 215 laps, more than he had led in any other season total, and clinched his spot in the NASCAR Chase to the Championship.
This was Stewart-Haas Racing’s 4th win in the first 6 races of the season. Kyle Busch had a run going in the last few laps, but ran out of laps to catch Bowyer. Finishing in second place, Stage 2 winner, and a man who led 145+ laps Ryan Blaney came home with a third place finish
Defending series Champion, and last weeks winner in California, Martin Truex Jr finished with another top 5 coming home in 4th place.
Bowyer’s teammate, former series Champion, and a multi-time race winner this year Kevin Harvick came home fifth, followed by Joey Logano in his Penske Ford finished 6th. Alex Bowman who took over the 88 car after fan favorite Dale Earnhardt Jr retired at the end of last season came home in 7th, and A.J Allmendinger came home 8th, both of which were season high finishes.
The series moves back west to Texas, where the OReilly Auto Parts 500 awaits at Texas Motor Speedway, another mile and a half track. Look for plenty of action from the Lone Star State as Havick looks to return to the winner’s circle and add to his sizeable points lead.
