Dash Cam Video Shows Just Exactly How Good Airbags Work!
I’m going to tell you guys up front, this is some pretty intense footage. There aren’t any gory injuries or bad language that I can understand, but it does show a crash at a very high rate of speed and may bother somebody out there. For the most part, though, this footage is a great look both inside and outside a car at the moment of impact and exactly what happens when the bag deploy.
This family is cruising along at a reasonable speed when out of nowhere, the car in front of them slams into another car, sending both vehicles sliding across the roadway. With no time to react other than hit the brakes and brace for impact, the car with the dashcam rolling slams hard into the car that had just moments before been traveling the same direction.
As you can imagine, this results in a violent collision that deploys the driver and passenger airbag in the camera car. While everything happens the blink of an eye, keep watching, as there is also a slow motion replay that helps illustrate just how quickly the bags inflate fully and give the two front seat occupants a softer impact, relatively speaking, than the steering wheel or dash. The bags do their jobs perfectly as designed and the occupants seem to be just fine only seconds after the terrifying collision.
In fact, the driver exits the vehicle, most likely to escape the fumes from the chemical reaction that takes place to fill the bag so quickly, which can be seen in the video immediately following the crash. By opening his door, he also vented the fumes out of the driver’s compartment, affording the other passengers some relief from the non-toxic but annoying fumes.
This is a great video to use to help people understand what happens inside a car when an airbag is inflated, because most can’t understand how quickly everything happens. It’s quite literally in the blink of an eye.
