Don’t Let the Vinyl Top Fool You, this isn’t Grandpa’s Church Cruiser
There are some cars that really just don’t look the part of a speedy machine but that’s ok because that’s exactly what the person behind the wheel wants you to think. In this BigKleib34 video, we catch up with a car that fits the bill of “sleeper” quite nicely.
On the outside, we see nothing more than a Dodge Aspen, a nameplate doesn’t exist anymore and most younger people probably don’t even know ever existed at all. Originally, the car might have been something that your grandparents used to head out to the market and maybe deliver themselves to church on Sundays as well. It most certainly isn’t something that you would expect to see out on the drag strip picking off competitors.
However, this Aspen is hiding something stealthy that is able to power the car down the quarter mile to some impressive times. With a 5.3L LS engine pulled out of a truck with a factory GM LS6 camshaft and a little bit of boost, this car is able to push its way down the track to 11-second passes. The owner says that the car has been a personal best of 11.2-seconds in the quarter but on this day, a flex pipe broke, disallowing the car to build any kind of boost. Still, even though it was a little bit injured, high 11s isn’t too bad for a 3900-pound car like this!
When this thing is putting along on the street without the racing slicks out back, it probably gives folks quite the surprise when they hear that turbo sneeze. With all of the cookie cutter builds out there, it’s really refreshing to see something different hit the track with success. Check out the passes in the BigKleib34 video from Cecil County Dragway below and tell us what you think of this monster in sheep’s clothing.
