Ford Powerstroke Turbo on a Ford 5.0! – Engine Masters
It’s not supposed to work, or at least it’s not supposed to work well. Longtime gearhead guru David Freiburger and the Engine Masters crew decided to take a Ford 5.0 liter engine and bolt up a turbo kit. Nothing new there, right?
Well, it’s not exactly that simple. This isn’t some tested and proven off-the-shelf turbo kit, nor is it a custom-ordered setup that at least has a turbo matched to the behavior of the 5.0 liter Ford power plant. Instead, they’ve pulled the snail off of a Ford Powerstroke diesel and mated it to the gasoline-burning five-point-oh. Conventional wisdom will tell you diesel turbos don’t work on gas engines, and in this case, conventional wisdom isn’t so wise, as Freiburger and crew will prove in this very video.
David walks us through the setup itself as well as the through process that went into choosing this combination, and then they spin the engine up on the dyno to see just how much power it makes. With respectable baseline numbers of 277 horsepower and 312 ft/lbs of torque to work with, they crank the boost up to 15 pounds, which in theory is doubling the atmospheric pressure compared to a naturally aspirated combo, and things go almost exactly as planned, and we know how rarely that happens, especially on the first try!
The horsepower number jumped to 550 while the torque number rose by almost double as well to 617, meaning both numbers were within just a few of being double the baseline figures. This, ladies and gentlemen, is why Freiburger is a legend in the automotive community, because not only did he and the Engine Masters crew come up with this idea, they put it into action and got the results they expected. We can’t wait to see what these guys have in store on the next episodes of Engine Masters!
