GMC Sierra Destroys Baggage Claim at Airport After Plowing Fence, Rolling by Planes

A wild scene unfolded at Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport in the early morning hours of December 19th. A GMC Sierra ended up in the baggage claim area in a scene that looked something like a movie. However, this was far from a fictional undertaking. This is very much real life.

Fox 13 Tampa Bay reported that the truck “crashed through a perimeter fence, then drove across the air carrier ramp — not far from the parked aircraft — at a “very high rate of speed.” The truck crossed the ramp and crashed through the wall of the baggage claim area, where it remained until a tow truck arrived.”

After plowing through a cinderblock wall and damaging one of the carousels, the truck would come to a rest. There was reportedly only a couple of workers in the area and none were hurt. Whoever made the desk between the National and Alamo kiosks should be considered for a raise. The speeding truck came to a sudden stop when running into the counter.

Employees did remark that it was incredibly fortunate that this happened at the hour that it did. A watermark on the security footage indicates it was slightly before 3 AM local time. If it were at any other time of the day, odds are, there would have been many more people in the vicinity.

Behind the wheel, authorities found 40-year-old Juan Monsivis of Bradento. Monsivis was transported to the hospital with serious injuries. He is also said to have a history of arrests for drugs, DUI, and driving on suspended licenses. Those charges date back 9 years to 2010 and prior. Officials haven’t indicated that any details related to the cause of the incident.

As far as the airport, it’ll be down to only a single baggage belt at about the worst time possible. As the holiday season approaches, it’s slated to be their busiest couple of weeks of the year.
