Go On Board With World Of Outlaws Sprint Car For Hot Laps

Sprint cars are insanely badass race cars that feature one of the highest power-to-weight ratios in all of motorsports, especially for cars that aren’t raced in a straight line. Weighing in at just 1,400 pounds and cranking out 900 horsepower, these cars are capable of speeds in excess of 160 MPH, a number made all the more impressive when you consider they race on dirt and never actually gain full traction.

To put in perspective just how fast these cars are, when Bristol Motor Speedway was covered with dirt back in the early 2000’s for a special Sprint Car race at the historic half mile speedway, Sammy Swindell broke the track record, running a full second and a half quicker than the quickest lap ever laid down by a NASCAR stock car. These things roll out, and the way the drivers kick the cars sideways in the corners and drive with the throttle is quite literally poetry in motion.

Now that you have a little insight into just how fast and powerful these cars are, we’re going to send you onboard a winged Sprint Car as the driver makes a few practice laps. Called Hot Laps, these practice runs let the drivers find the racing groove, which changes from track to track and even hour to hour as the cars sling the dirt each lap.

We get a great look at the car’s steering angle and you can hear the driver feathering the throttle to keep the angle just right to lay down the quickest laps possible. It’s a delicate balance of speed and precision that is a lot of fun to watch, and we have to assume even more fun to do.

Go ahead and put the video in full screen mode, crank up the sound and hit the play button. It’s not even remotely close to actually being there, but it’s as close as any of us are going to get right now, so make the most of the experience!
