Honda Recalls Class Leader Over Dangerous Fire Risk

When it comes to minivans, Honda has it figured out. The Honda Odyssey is one of the country’s best selling minivans.

Today, a good number of those vans are due to come back to the automaker. In a recall that will touch on 241,000 vans, a wiring issue has been discovered that might start a fire. The automaker is under the impression that a manufacturing issue could pinch a wiring harness used for a third-row power outlet. The issue might cause a short circuit that could and has led to a fire. In fact, Honda says that three cases have unfolded so far. Luckily, no injuries have come about as a result of the mishap.

The recall will address EX-L, Touring, and Elite minivans from the 2018 through 2020 model years. The issue will be fixed by rerouting the wire and wrapping it in insulating tape. Owners will be notified in mid-March.

When it comes to the words that automakers pretty much never want to hear or say, I would think that “recall” would be up near the top of the list. There’s nothing that deflates a bottom line more than repairing cars that have already been sold. In turn, they end up getting absolutely no return on the money spent. In addition, these recalls could cause an impact to the brand. One never knows how the public is going to respond when learning about shortcomings in production.

In a game where competition is high, you have to be on your game. It can be a challenge when it comes to designing a product that people are going to want to buy repeatedly. One of the main components there is that it isn’t going to come back through your doors at the end of the day for you to start wrenching on again
