How It Works – Steel Production

Steel is one of those materials that is so commonly used in our daily lives that it’s really easy to take for granted. However, it’s incredibly important and plays a huge role in our daily routine, so we’re going inside the production of the heavy-duty material to see how it’s made.

In this in-depth walk through at the steel factory, we follow the production from the very beginning, where the process starts with junk piled up for recycling. Those massive piles of scrap are separated and sorted into appropriate sections of the factory production line. We then follow the melting process, where the metals are heated to 3,000 degrees before being poured – still in its super-hot liquid state – into ladles where different treatment processes take place.

From there, the forming process begins, and heat treatment routines make the steel much more durable and resilient. The steel is then coiled and cleaned and sent on through the mill for various finishing treatments. This is a fascinating look inside the factory and really shows what kind of work goes into one of the products we take for granted so often.
