How Strong is a 3D Printed Part?
3D Printing is still a rapidly growing segment of the technology industry, and with tests like this proving how printed items can be a viable option in high-stress situations, confidence in the fledgling manufacturing process should continue this rapid growth.
Boat props face some serious stress while spinning rapidly underwater, providing thrust for boats of all sizes. These 3D printed props were put to the test, first in a test tank with an engine strapped to it, then in an actual short jaunt through the choppy waters nearby. The props are printed from various substances – polycarbonate, ABS plastic, and even wood – and put through the ringer, win varying degrees of success. There’s also a carbon fiber prop for comparison.
We’re not going to spoil the results, you have to watch the video for that, but we will tell you that the carbon fiber prop is the first one to bite the dust. Check out the video and see for yourself which material stands up best to this underwater test!
