If a Drone And a Motorcycle Had a Baby You Would Get This!
For decades, the flying car has been the one thing people thought we would see by the year 2000 that has failed to materialize. We’ve seen several attempts, but most of them pop up with a big buzz, then fade into obscurity when, for one reason or another, the concept never comes to market as a viable option.
I can tell you from my personal perspective that the main problem is packaging and control. Most of us envision a car that flies, and expect similar controls in a form that resembles a car. I think we owe this to Hollywood and The Jetsons, personally. However, what we realistically need to be expecting is a small, affordable personal aircraft that can also be driven on land short distances to get us where we’re going. This requires a few things that are very un-car-like, such as wings and a tail and propellers or jet engines. As you can imagine, that’s going to cause nightmares when you try to swing through the drive thru.
However, the solution may be less “small airplane” and more “big drone”, which is exactly what Hoversurf is banking on with its Hoverbike Scorpion 3, a pretty cool looking mash-up of a drone and a motorcycle. As you can see in the video below, the rider is perched atop the Scorpion just like he would be a sport bike, and the 4 large rotors look and function just like a drone that we see so often in the skies these days. With the right software in place to keep the bike upright and stable, it should be fairly easy to control and, most importantly, safe for even novice riders to operate.
Whether or not we see this concept come to the market and carve out a niche remains to be seen, but the fact that there are still companies out there putting effort into getting us from point a to point b without roads is a pretty good indicator that the future is upon us!
