Is welding in space possible? In space, metals can weld together without heat or melting.
When it comes to combining the two metal objects into one here on Earth, several factors need to come into play. The first and foremost factor that one would consider when welding is the idea that both of the metals that are cemented together need to be heated up to the point where they melt, naturally so.
However, as astronauts learned in quite a heart dropping fashion, in space, the process isn’t the same at all and the way that they found out all about the process known as “cold welding” was incredibly dangerous and could have caused this team big time! The story is one that will keep you on the edge of your seat all the way through!
When you head out into space it just so turns out that you don’t even need heat to weld at all (No JB Weld, either). All that needs to happen is for metals to come into contact and have completely clean surfaces. At this point, the atoms of both metals will fuse together and form a weld as simply as that.
Check out the video down below that goes into detail about how welding in space differs from welding down here on Earth. It’s things like this that really blow your mind about the vast blackness that lies beyond Earth’s atmosphere. What other wild anomalies lie beyond the area in which we live our other day lives?
