Jay Leno Checks Out the Ultimate Storm Chasing Truck
For those looking for the ultimate adrenaline rush, chasing storms has to be one of the most visceral experiences imaginable. It might take a dose of crazy as well as that need for adrenaline. However, we still can’t help but love the results of this work. Being able to get up close and personal with a tornado is definitely something that we love getting the ability to watch.
As off-the-wall and crazy as some of this might seem, the guys behind it actually put a good amount of thought into it. At the end of the day, those who are successful at storm chasing take many precautions in order to get through the ordeal safely. It isn’t as simple as grabbing a camera and hopping in the ol’ pickup truck.
So how exactly does one go to about putting together their own storm chasing rig? Well, long story short is that it’s done with a lot of thought, a bit of engineering, and a very padded bank account.
This particular rig started out life as a 6.7L diesel-powered Ford F-350. However, with a whole bunch of armor, technology to gauge the weather, and recording technology as well, we find an entirely new vehicle. In fact, unless someone were familiar with the headlights and mirrors of their Ford pickup trucks, they might not even recognize the machine that they call “Dominator 3.”
The owner of this truck along with the one and only Jay Leno takes the opportunity to give us the guided tour of this $750,000 storm chaser. We think they might do a slightly better job of going a little bit further in-depth about what it takes in order to be a storm chaser from the equipment to the mentality and everything in between.
This one isn’t for the faint of heart.
