Manual Log Splitter Made From Steel Off-Cuts and a Car Spring
Generally speaking, splitting wood is no easy task. Swinging an axe over and over to split logs, while certainly a great workout and credit on your man card, is just plain inefficient. As we do, plenty of guys have set out to find a simpler, less grueling way to provide a stack of firewood, and there are some pretty spectacular machines out there that do the work very quickly.
Taking a different approach, this young man has built a simple machine that completes the task in short order with much less physical labor required. Built from steel scraps and a coil spring from a car’s suspension, this basic sprung lever has an axe head on one end and leverages the weight of the steel to power through the wood with ease, while the spring provides assistance on lifting the arm and holding it out of the way while the next log is loaded in place for splitting.
There’s something to be said about a man that works “smarter, not harder” as my dad always told me. This enterprising fellow can now spend less time and energy getting wood cut and more time enjoying the fire, or he can work a little longer and make some cash selling his firewood. It wouldn’t take long to pay for this machine several times!
