Marvel Drone Show Teases Galactus and Fantastic Four at Comic-Con
Marvel pulled out all the stops at the 2024 Comic-Con with a surprise drone and fireworks display that left fans buzzing with excitement. The show, which teased the upcoming Fantastic Four movie and its villain, Galactus, was announced by Marvel boss Kevin Feige during the “Deadpool & Wolverine” panel on Thursday night.
Marvel’s Spectacular Sky Show
“Look up in the sky! It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s… Marvel teasing the upcoming Fantastic Four movie and its villain, Galactus, during a surprise drone and fireworks show at 2024 Comic-Con.”
At the end of Thursday night’s Deadpool & Wolverine panel, Marvel boss Kevin Feige told Hall H attendees to “wait ’til your watch says 9:40, and then look to the sky above PetCo Park.” Right on cue, a massive drone show commenced, forming the imposing character of Galactus in the sky. The purple planet-eater rose above the San Diego Padres’ baseball stadium, creating a breathtaking visual spectacle. Moments later, the drones reassembled into the iconic Fantastic Four logo, accompanied by a dazzling fireworks display.
The dramatic reveal hinted at the epic scale and excitement fans can expect from the Fantastic Four movie, set to integrate Marvel’s first family into the MCU.
Introducing the Cast and Crew
The excitement didn’t stop with the drone show. Marvel also revealed key casting details for the Fantastic Four movie. Ralph Ineson will take on the role of the legendary planet-eater, Galactus. He’ll face off against the previously announced members of the Fantastic Four: Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Joseph Quinn as Johnny Storm/The Human Torch, and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Grimm/The Thing.
Rounding out the cast are Paul Walter Hauser and John Malkovich in undisclosed roles, adding even more intrigue to the film’s lineup. With such a stellar cast, fans are eagerly anticipating the dynamic interactions and dramatic confrontations that will unfold on the big screen.
Behind the camera, WandaVision’s Matt Shakman is set to direct the new movie. Shakman’s involvement promises a unique vision for the film, given his experience blending superhero action with deep, character-driven storytelling.
A Period Piece with a Twist
Marvel has kept most of the plot details under wraps, but Feige has revealed that the film will be a period piece set in 1960s New York. However, he hinted that it might not be the same 1960s New York viewers are familiar with. “There was another piece of art we released with Johnny Storm flying in the air making a 4 symbol, and there was a cityscape in the corner of that image,” Feige said on The Official Marvel Podcast. “There were a lot of smart people who noticed that that cityscape didn’t look exactly like the New York that we know, or the New York that existed in the ‘60s in our world. Those are smart observations, I’ll say.”
This cryptic clue has fans speculating about the potential for alternate realities or time travel within the MCU. The 1960s setting also opens up exciting possibilities for the story, as it can explore the era’s unique cultural and historical context, blending it with the fantastical elements of the Marvel universe.
