Modern Day Gunslingers: Cummings Motorsports Putting In Work
In the NHRA’s sportsman ranks, there are a few last names that strike fear into the hearts of opponents in the other lane. Growing up around these grassroots racers, I know seeing names like Biondo, Fletcher, and Rampy in the other lane will wreck your concentration, and at that point the game is usually over anyway. There are many names on that list, some more recognizable than other, but there are few names more closely associated with “about to get your butt kicked” than Cummings.
Brothers Slate and Britt Cummings have been among the most successful racers on the sportsman level for some two decades, and they continue to rack up the wins in a multitude of cars and classes. Now Britt’s son Cole has taken up the family pastime of kicking ass on the track, having built himself quite a reputation in his – comparatively speaking – short time on the track.
When the team loaded up and made the short trip from their home state of Louisiana to the AAA Texas NHRA Fallnationals a few weeks ago, Slate would make a run at the rare Double Up, taking the win in Super Stock, but coming up just short in Stock Eliminator with a semifinal finish. In Super Gas, Cole exited eliminations early when an uncharacteristic late reaction time put him behind early against eventual runner-up Jerry DeBusk, pushing Cole to break out on the 9.90 index.
Not only are these guys all stellar drivers, they have a rolling support rig where they stock a pile of parts for drivers in need. To top it all off, they’re fun to hang out with before, during and after the race. There’s never a dull moment in the Cummings’ pit, and these guys bring the party with them to every event. Keep an eye our for that trademark Moser Red and stop by their pit and say hello, just be sure to tell them Speed Society sent you.
