Never Underestimate Nitro, Funny Car Blows Crew’s Pants Off, Runs Over a Man
Come race day, especially with an operation as serious as a Funny Car team, there are tons of factors to consider. To make the thousands of horsepower that these guys do on a regular basis and get down the track in just mere seconds as they soar to over 300 mph, lots of moving parts are in place and if just one pops out of place by enough of a margin, really catastrophic things could happen. Even in the burnout box, it’s really necessary to be on your toes because, as you see here, that even if you are on your toes, catastrophe can find a way to fall right in your lap.
This time, we check out a little bit of a throwback video that takes us for a ride with Tony Pedragon’s Top Fuel car. As the car appears to have some issues in the burnout box, the team comes closer to assess the problem and when they do, all hell is unleashed.
It had to be horrifying to be on the scene that day and watch as the team would attempt to lift the shell off of the car, when all of a sudden, the car would crack open at full throttle, causing the crew member in the front to be run over by the car and have one of the crew members standing off the to the side have his pants blown completely off by the exhaust, leaving him hospitalized with second and third-degree burns.
Luckily, everybody was able to escape without any life-threatening injuries but this definitely just goes to show you how you shouldn’t underestimate the power of nitro and also gives you an opportunity to have an all-new level of appreciation for what exactly these guys are going up against when they head out there on race day.
