NHRA Legend Don “The Snake” Prudhomme Explains Why Indy Matters So Much
Don Prudhomme is a living legend among NHRA nitro racers. Having won the US Nationals five times as a driver in Funny Car and twice more in Top Fuel as a car owner, “The Snake” as he’s still known to many knows all about winning The Big Go.
As the race draws near, pro and sportsman teams alike, along with crews, media members, fans and legends of the sport are all either already on their way or preparing to make the journey to Indy for the 64th running of the most prestigious drag race in the world. Listening to Prudhomme’s words and watching the jubilation and heartbreak both shown in this promotional video from NHRA gave me chills, especially after being there for Steve Torrence’s Double-Up and have been packing and preparing for the past few days to go back for the second time as a photographer.
With some 600 plus cars entered and countless tens of thousands of fans flying or driving in from around the world, the atmosphere in Indy is quite literally electric. There’s a buzz around the event that is unmatched by any I’ve ever personally experienced, and this year promises to be as big as ever. Luckily, myself and our social media manager Randy will be on hand to bring you the action from our perspective, which will hopefully include one or more of our drivers making it to victory lane.
We will be headed up Wednesday and at the track Thursday to check in with our drivers and find out what they have in store for the weekend. On Friday, we’ll be attending the DSR Open House and then Saturday through Monday, it will be the marathon weekend we all know and love, capped off with eliminations on Monday.
Check back often throughout the weekend for updates on our drivers as well as any breaking news from Indy, where we hope to meet some of our readers and fans as well!
