Rare Garage Find: 1970 Dodge Challenger RT in Burnt Orange!

I did quite a bit of digging, but couldn’t find the exact number of 1970 Challenger R/T’s built wearing this particular color, but based on the fact that there were only 9,000 383 Magnum-powered hardtop R/T’s built and that most of those would wear a more common shade, it seems likely there are less than 1,000 of these floating around painted in Dark Burnt Orange Metallic. While we’ve certainly run across lower numbers, that’s definitely going to fall under the “rare” banner.

The car has a pretty interesting story too, and the guy with the camera, YouTuber freakineagle, just happens to know it very well, since he was the cars owner at one time, at least partially. You see, the Challenger R/T you see in the video below belonged to his now-ex wife, who bought it new back in 1970. He and the cars owner would end up married a year later and actually used this very Challenger R/T to tow – yes, you read that correctly – his 1968 Pontiac GTO to the drag strip. As crazy as that sounds, the Challenger likely made a pretty good tow vehicle with plenty of torque from the 383 CID engine and solidly-built chassis and body.

The couple would split in 1978, but our intrepid cameraman kept and eye on the car over the years until his ex finally decided to put the car up for sale. When she did, she gave him first option to buy the car. Whether he did or not, we aren’t sure, but he did stop by with his camera to give us a great look at this rare ride.

The car isn’t running, but the body appears to be in pretty excellent shape despite having been sitting for decades. At least she had the common sense to keep the car inside and out of the elements, which would have destroyed the amazing color beyond repair. Hopefully freakinagle did buy the car and has been able to get it back up and running!
