Robby Gordon Slammed By Australian Police Under Anti Hooning Legislation
American race car driving Robby Gordon has raced off-road trucks all of his life, winning multiple championships throughout his illustrious career. With nine series championships across two different sanctioning bodies and three wins each in the Baja 500 and Baja 1000, Gordon has long been established as one of the best off-road racers to ever tighten the belts in a trophy truck, but even those credentials don’t set Robby outside the law, as he found out recently after a court date in Australia.
Gordon, the owner of the Speed Energy Formula Off Road series, also drives a truck in the series. Following a race in Darwin, Gordon took one of the trucks from the series, each of which he also owns, and ripped off a couple of donuts in the street. Gordon said he’d asked permission from a couple of nearby security guards, who gave their approval, but that also doesn’t change the laws in the city. According to officials, the stunt violated anti-hooning laws and prompted them to summon Gordon to court. Gordon pled his case, but to no avail, as he would convicted of four separate violations and liable for several thousand dollars in fines. He was also banned from driving in the Northern Territory for a year.
The sentence seems reasonable, but puts the series livelihood in the Land Down Under in serious jeopardy, as it seems unlikely Gordon will return to put on an event in a city he’s not legally allowed to drive in. However, the judge likely doesn’t care, as he said in court that he wished he had the legal capacity to revoke Gordon’s competition license. Robby doesn’t seem to be interested in appealing the ruling, likely knowing it would be a fruitless effort. We’ll bring any further developments on the situation as they become available.
