The Production of Large Crankshafts in Germany is Impressive!
Yet another video about man imposing his will over metal, this time to create instead of destroy!
Crankshafts are the heart of an engine as the central shaft that the combustion process is applied to, sending power rearward to the drivetrain. The forces a crank endures are massive, so they have to be incredibly durable and precisely forged and machined, a process we get an inside look at in this video.
This German factory builds cranks of all shape, size and configuration using a host of processes to ensure the cranks are built to the exacting tolerances required to operate under such extreme conditions as the inside of an engine. They start by forging a raw steel shaft which then undergoes a precise machining process to make sure the bearing surfaces are perfectly round and the exact dimensions required to reduce friction and ensure proper oiling for lubrication. Then the crank has to be balanced to reduce vibration and stress.
This video is more a promotional background video, giving you a look at all steps of the process throughout the factory.
