These Guys Turn Luxury Porsche’s Into Off-Road Monsters!
I’ll be the first to admit, when I saw the title of this video, I was beyond skeptical of what I was about to watch. “Who takes a Porsche off-roading?” I thought to myself. But after watching the video and learning of the automaker’s ties to off-road racing, it makes a lot more sense now. Plus, these cars actually turn out pretty damn cool.
The company featured in the video is called The Keen Project, and it’s headed up by professional driver and Porsche expert Leh Keen. With a deep love of the German brand, Keen took an uncommon approach to finding his niche in the Porsche world with the Keen Project, a company that converts the iconic 911 into a legitimate off-road Safari racer. Imagine a Rally car on steroids, Safari racers are built to withstand harsher terrain than their rally car brethren, while still maintaining the same level of control and durability you’d expect from any Porsche.
The cars are fitted with fully upgraded suspension parts that increase the ride height for ground clearance, added travel in the suspension, and to clear the taller, meatier tires. Inside, the cars get a few custom touches, such as the seats and door panels being wrapped in some of the crazy interior prints used by the automaker back in the 70’s and 80’s. While they might be a bit garish, the over-the-top cloth patterns actually fit the personality of the beefed up 911 perfectly.
While these are older models that are being converted, don’t expect that to mean you’re going to get in one cheap. Keen says those interested in one of his Safari racers should plan on dropping about $120K, which includes finding the car, having the necessary upgrades installed, and having Leh himself test drive the car before it is delivered to the owner. Personally, think that sounds like a bargain considering all the fun that could be had in a car like this!
