They Tried Texting and Racing… It Didn’t Go Well

While driving on the roadway with other motorists, pedestrians, and all sorts of moving parts that go into any successful trip, no matter how long or short, it’s important to keep your wits about you as a driver. For as many moving parts that are outside of the vehicle, there are just as many distractions inside. Not too long ago, the only distractions to worry about would be something like the radio but nowadays, with how common complicated cell phones are, drivers have a whole new set of rules to play by. In fact, as we have come to be used to, cell phones have been found to be so distracting that they are no longer allowed while driving in the majority of developed areas.

It seems like a pretty well accepted fact that distracted driving is a good way to get yourself into a crash on public roadways. However, the crew over at Hoonigan was wondering what exactly would happen if a driver was distracted while racing. We’ve been wrong before but feel pretty confident in asserting that you’ll be hard pressed to find someone on their cell phone while engaged in motorsport but hypothetically, should that situation unfold, how much worse would a driver perform with their eyes off of the prize?

By following along with the video below, we get an inside look at a little bit of an experiment that attempts to take the concept of distracted driving and apply it to a racing scenario. At the end of the day, this looks like it ends up being a little bit more my competition than it is an experiment, but still really provides some insight as to how our brains end up perceiving the road ahead along with trying to recognize all of the distractions that come flying in our direction in the meanwhile.
