This Gorgeous S10 Known As The Flying Pickle Puts In Work At Lights Out 9
If you follow small tire racing at all, there’s a real good chance you’re seen the Flying Pickle, this gorgeous S10 owned by the Roemer family from just north of Chicago. The truck has been through several iterations, each time rolling out looking and running better than the previous. Driver Michael Roemer is also a hell of a wheelman, as you’ll see in this video from our partner Justin over at the JMalcom2004 YouTube channel.
The truck is powered by a wicked BES-built small block that’s inhaling a healthy dose of nitrous thanks to the Induction Solutions fogger system. Close family friend Jim “Dr. Ford” Plimpton does the tuning and can be seen guiding Michael into the beams before he launches does the ultra-sticky SGMP surface during last month’s Lights Out 9. Backing the engine is a Pro Torque torque converter that sends the power to a Performance Transmissions-built powerglide transmission. From there, the ponies continue rearward through a 4.30-geared Ford 9” rear end, outward from there via beefy 40-spline axles to the Weld Racing wheels. The truck rides on Menscer Motorsports-tuned shocks that keep the rear tires planted, and as you can see, they do that job very well.
The truck looks as good as it runs thanks to the awesome paint and body work, also performed by Plimpton at his shop, Authentic Auto, and features a custom one-off hood and ground effects that really bring the truck’s appearance to a level matching its on-track performance. To date, the Pickle has been a best of 4.793 at 147 MPH, showing there’s a ton of power under that custom hood. The truck competes in the Ultra and Ultimate Street classes and has also been known to click off the scoreboards and do a little no time racing now and then. Keep an eye our for these guys at a track near you and go by and say hello. I promise you, you will not find a nicer group of folks anywhere!
