‘Top Gun’ Sequel Begins Filming in San Diego CA – “Maverick Is Back!”
I’ll tell you guys up front, I’m gonna kind of geek out a little bit and probably write several more articles about this because Top Gun is and always has been my favorite movie. While the movie was a box office hit and remains a fan favorite some three decades after its release, I have a close personal connection with the movie thanks to it bringing my dad and I closer together over the years. Any time we had drifted apart, we’d sit down together and watch Maverick and Goose do their thing and chat during the boring parts and by the time “You’ve Lost That Loving Feeling” plays again and Maverick and Charlie reconnect in the diner, it was like we hadn’t missed a beat.
When I heard there was going to be a sequel – first rumored years ago – I was guardedly excited. For a while that was all there was, a rumor here and there but nothing to back up the claims that a sequel was, in fact, in the works. However, the announcement that filming on Top Gun: Maverick has started, including a tweet from Lt. Pete Mitchell himself, played by Tom Cruise, showing our flyboy hero looking toward a fighter jet with the simple caption “#Day1” has got me downright giddy.
The fact that at least part of the filming is being done in Speed Society’s hometown of San Diego, where much of the original film was shot, has got me looking for any excuse to get on a plane out west to visit the SS family and see if I can catch a glimpse of the action on set as well.
I will definitely be following the production of the film as closely as possible and will bring you guys any big updates as things progress toward the estimated release date approximately one year from now. I hope somebody out there is excited as I am, as I’ll be buying tickets to see this as soon as they go on sale and will probably see it in theaters more than once!
