Truck Rolls Into Shopping Mall, Goes For a Spin Inside

It was in September of 2019 that a rather unsettling scene would break out in the Woodfield mall. Those inside the mall in the suburb of Chicago were greeted with a rather unusual situation as a Chevrolet Trailblazer was seen rolling through the shopping facility.

Along the way, authorities tell us that over $110,000 in damage was caused as the vehicle bounced from store to store. Those in the mall tried their best to get out of the way as the driver continued on.

The 23-year-old man behind the wheel was indicted on charges of terrorism and criminal damage to property. However, it would later be revealed that he was suffering from mental health issues. Schizophrenia was mentioned as the cause of the incident. In addition, the defendant’s counsel said that he has no ties to any sort of terrorist group.

The man’s family told Chicago’s ABC affiliate that he “Had been diagnosed with schizophrenia and has been in treatment for the past three years. They said that despite the family’s best efforts, his condition had worsened in the months before the mall incident.” Because of this, the man would later be found unfit to stand trial.

Instead, he is set to be treated at the Cook County Jail psychiatric unit until where prosecutors say he will stay until he’s able to understand the charges brought against him. It’s truly an unfortunate situation that might just help some realize how real these sorts of conditions can be.

Below, another local news station was able to catch up with a witness who described their encounter with the black Trailblazer. The witness claims that the vehicle ran over a kiosk and drove into several stores, pinballing between them and breaking glass as he drove.

The situation certainly provided a scare. Nobody was seriously injured.
