Utah Couple’s Honesty Costs Them Thousands of Dollars

In this world, sometimes, we face situations that are incredibly complicated but the right thing to do is readily apparent. Still, nobody ever said that doing the right thing is always easy.

For example, somebody who unknowingly purchases something that was stolen can really end up in a bad situation if they find out what the real story behind the item is. Not only have they spent the money in order to get the thing but now they have something that they can’t even really legally own. Sure, with something like a piece of construction equipment, someone could play dumb. However, a good person will have a conscience would eventually give the machine back to its rightful owner even if it means losing money in the process.

This time, we check in with a Utah couple who would end up running into that exact situation. In fact, their honesty would end up costing them over $11,000.

When Cody Jolley took ownership of a skid steer to help with his business and do a couple of projects in the backyard, he and his wife were incredibly excited. However, after jokingly being sent an article describing stolen construction equipment, the Jolleys’ hearts would race as they would eventually find that the article was less of a joke than everybody originally thought. Instead, it had turned out that they managed to find themselves in possession of stolen equipment that they had purchased honestly.

Knowing that it was the right thing to do, the couple would eventually end up returning equipment to its rightful owner. However, it appears as if they would be out the $11,500 purchase price in the process. However, hundreds of people who saw the story would set up a GoFundMe. As of now, $16,895 has been raised to reimburse the Jolleys for their honesty.

Down in the video below, a local news report discovers the situation and explains exactly how the parties went about handling it. It’s such a shame that bad people can end up causing so much collateral damage when it comes to intentions that are less than honest. Fortunately, the community banded together to make sure that good was circulated once again on behalf of someone who did the right thing.
