Walking on a Windmill Blade 300 Feet Above Ground!

It looks like there might be a new letter to add to BASE jumping. The acronym, each letter of which stands for the four main categories of objects that a jumper can leap from – Building, Antenna, Span (bridge), and Earth (cliff) – may have to make room for a “W” if what we see in the video below becomes as common as it seems like it may.

Throughout the country, there are farms of these massive windmills that harness the power of the breeze and churn out electricity in great amounts. To do this in the most efficient way, these turbines are massive, standing 300 feet tall and utilizing 100 foot long blades that spin gracefully in the wind.

Obviously, it was only a matter of time before a daredevil decided to take a flying leap off of one, and luckily there were several cameras there to capture the stunt and we have that footage here in all its butt-puckering glory. Just going to the top of one of these massive structures would be enough to trigger my anxiety, but actually walking out onto the blade with no kind of harness or rope would have my pulse racing. I’m 100% sure there’s no way I could jump off of it, and I’m equally sure I’d freeze up and not be able to turn around and walk back, so I guess if I ever find myself on the end of a windmill blade, I’ll just have to live there.

This guy, however, is obviously a little more daring than myself and simply walks off the edge of the blade, plummeting toward the ground with nothing but a few yards of fabric and some ropes to keep him from hitting the earth at a high rate of speed. Thankfully, his chute opens as planned and he’s able to glide slowly to the ground and live to fly another day. There’s no telling what else these guys will find to jump from, and you can bet they’ll bring cameras to document the experience as well, and we’ll probably bring you those as well.
