What Happens If You Leave Tesla Autopilot On Forever? (Terrible Idea)
Tesla Motors has made autopilot in cars a viable option. Once the stuff of sci-fi movies, autopilot is now used daily for commuters thanks to Tesla’s incredible advancements in sensor technology and programming how the car behaves under its own control.
Since the system isn’t meant to be a chauffeur so much as it is a break from the monotony of driving, their programming has a built-in failsafe to make sure the driver remains alert, prompting him to check in every so often by grabbing the steering wheel. But what happens when you don’t “check in”? Well watch below and find out.
The system starts out with an alert, prompting the driver to grab the wheel. If that is ignored, a second, visual and audible alert again prompts the driver to take over. Ignore that alert, and the system pulls and unexpected, and possibly dangerous, move and just stops, right in the middle of the road. Had this test taken place on a busy road, this could have resulted in a rear-end collision, or at least some angry drivers in the rearview. While we understand the need for some type of failsafe, we just aren’t sure stopping in the middle of the road is the best option.
