What it’s Like in a Ship Cabin During a Big Storm

When most of us think about taking a cruise, we imagine a leisurely trip aboard a luxurious ocean liner that drops us off at exotic locations up and down the coast before ferrying us back home with our skin aglow with a fresh tan, and for the most part that’s how those trips go. With modern weather forecasting tools on board, the ships crew is usually able to navigate around storms and keep the passengers comfortable on calm seas.

However, things don’t always go according to plan and even the most careful captain can run into an occasional storm. In the video below, we see what can happens aboard one of these massive ships when it ventures into a rolling storm. Big waves rise and fall, causing the ship to tilt drastically, and thanks to this crew member’s cabin-mounted camera, we are treated to a first-hand look at the chaos that ensues. As the ship tilts and leans, everything in the crewman’s cabin is thrown onto the floor, with his mini-fridge even spilling its contents onto he floor during the storm.

The crew guy, obviously having dealt with this before, decides to stay in bed with his iPad until the waves subside before getting up to clean the mess. After he wrangles up his stuff, the waves kick up again, sending his things flying about a second time. When he jumps up to clean again, the ship is still listing drastically, allowing our crewman to do a great Michael Jackson impression when he leans at some crazy angles to keep from falling when the vessel tilts in the storm.

We can’t imagine living like this, though getting paid to visit some of these awesome just might be worth the occasional storm and angry sea. Of course, it’s no secret that the crew lives a drastically different life from the guests, who enjoy a pretty luxurious experience while the employees retire to cramped cabins and spend most of their days waiting on the guests, so it may not be worth putting up with these storms after all.
