Which F150 Engine Would a Ford Technician pick?

When it comes to choosing an engine for your new Ford F150 pickup, you have several to choose from. In the current lineup, you’ll find the 2.7 liter EcoBoost, three versions of the 3.5 liter V6, and the vaunted 5.0 liter V8. Among the 3.5 liter offerings, there is the standard 3.5, the 3.5 EcoBoost, and the 3.5 EcoBoost High Output version that comes standard in the 2017 Raptor version of the F150.

With so many options, it may not be that easy for a potential buyer to make up their mind, so Town and Country Ford decided to do an informal poll of the people who would know best, asking their service crew which of the engines they’d choose for their own personal trucks.

With Town and Country located in the heart of pickup truck country in a state that does zero emissions inspections, it should come as no surprise that the majority of the guys in the shop said they’d go with the 5.0 liter V8, with the 3.5 EcoBoost getting a couple of votes as well. With 385 horsepower and 387 ft/lbs of torque on tap, the 5.0 liter is a solid engine, capable of towing anything you’d want to within reason while still knocking down a respectable 19 MPG on the highway.

The 3.5 liter EcoBoost gets 23 MPH on the highway, but gives up a little in the power department to achieve those numbers. While it still makes an impressive 375 horsepower, the fact that it’s twin turbo means you have to get the revs up to get into the power, while the torquey V8 has power available at any RPM. It’s telling that nobody chose the 2.7 liter version, but that doesn’t mean it’s not a solid value in the F150 world.
