Winter vs Summer Tires – What’s The Difference?

If you’ve ever picked yourself up a set of winter tires for treacherous condition driving, then you’ve probably wondered what exactly makes them so special to be able to handle the conditions better. All tires are simply made out of rubber right? How are they different?

This time, Engineering Explained takes a stab at explaining what exactly the difference is between summer tires and winter tires, telling us how the different parts of the tire will better accommodate the elements that you’re likely to experience during each season.

From the tread pattern to the tire compound and everything in between, the design of each tire actually gets a lot more complicated than you might imagine. A lot of science and math goes into making that the end consumer is safe and happy with their tire purchase.
