1968 Rat Rod Supercharged Dodge Charger at SEMA!
We’ve seen this project before, but I swear every time new footage of it shows up, it seems to be bigger and more ridiculous. The crew over at Welder Up put this project together and it’s a great look at what kind of rides come from the combination of vision and talent.
The platform is a 1968 Dodge Charger, but about all that remains of the legendary Detroit hotrod is the body, and normally that would be considered sacrilege, except when you take something to this extreme, it’s really not about the original platform, even one as awesome as a Charger.
This build, instead, is about extremes, and it’s a perfect illustration of just how far things can go when you toss expectations and norms out the window. The most obvious change is going to have to be the suspension, which how rivals that of some of the most badass truck builds we’ve seen. Replacing the factory suspension, what looks to be a full offroad setup with a couple of feet of suspension travel and some beefed up components to make sure this behemoth can handle anything it encounters.
The other extreme change comes under the hood, or at least where the hood should be. There’s no Hemi or Magnum V8 in there. Instead, there’s a twin-blown diesel that sounds downright wicked. The powerplant is tuned up and growls like it’s cranking out a couple thousand foot pounds of torque, giving a completely different look, feel and sound from any other Charger we’ve ever seen.
Add in some extreme body work in the form of a bare metal body with some tacked welded fender flares and Mad Max accents and you have the recipe for an over-the-top build that gets attention, even at a venue like SEMA where badass becomes mediocre.
