Clay Millican ROCKETS to a new world record
Two thousand seventeen has really come together to be the best year of Clay Millican’s NHRA career. After finding his way to the winner’s circle for the very first time under the NHRA banner earlier this year at the Thunder Valley Nationals in his home state of Tennessee, Clay and his crew chief David Grubnic have really tuned up the heat on the points leaders later in the season. Using the Bristol win to propel the team into the Countdown for the Championship, Grubnic began the process of dialing in the car’s tuneup for a late-season run at the NHRA world title. Tonight, that process paid off in spectacularly at Gateway Motorsports Park when Millican reset the top fuel elapsed time world record in absolutely stunning fashion.
In the second qualifying session for this weekends AAA Insurance Midwest Nationals, Millican and native Aussie threw everything they had in the Stringer Performance-owned dragster at the track and, needless to say, it stuck! When the noise subsided, the scoreboard told the tale: 3.631 seconds at 330.39 MPH! And just like that, Clay became the baddest man in the world, at least in the world of motorsports. The timeslip is ridiculous from top to bottom, even to a guy who recently pored over fellow Speed Society driver and now-former world record holder Leah Pritchett’s timeslip from her then-record run at Brainerd just a few weeks ago. The sixty foot is an otherworldly 0.812 seconds. Three hundred thirty feet came in just 2.054 seconds. The eighth mile time, always a great indicator of a run’s record potential is just as absurd at 2.903 seconds at 294.37 MPH. You know the rest of the numbers, and that couldn’t belong to a more deserving team, from the driver to the crew chief to the crew members and of course, the humble Doug Springer, the team’s financial backer.
We here at Speed Society send our heartfelt congratulations to Clay, David, Doug and the entire crew of talented young men who spin wrenches between rounds and keep this car running hard pass after pass. We are proud to have Clay on board with Speed Society and hope they’re able to parlay this historic run into a solid showing come eliminations on Sunday!
