2017 Lucas Oil Challenge Cup From a Photographers Perspective
As a photographer myself, this look at what goes on behind the scenes is a lot a typical day at the office for me as well, except the venue itself is quite a bit different than where I typically shoot. San Diego-based photographer Daniel Schenkelberg covers all types of motorsports throughout the southwestern United States and decided to do some behind the scenes footage of what goes on while he’s out there capturing the action.
This particular event, the Lucas Oil Challenge Cup held at the Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park just outside Phoenix, AZ is a great venue for capturing the high-flying, dust-slinging Lucas Oil series. Daniel walks us through setting up his remote camera, a setup used for getting shots in areas where the rules – or common sense – say a person doesn’t need to be standing while racing is taking place. Daniel uses a remote trigger to fire the camera from a safe location, allowing him to get the shots he wants while remaining a safe distance away.
After setting up his remote, he takes his other camera and ventures to one of the portals in the fence to shoot the action from there. As the race proceeds, Daniel uses both the camera he’s carrying and the remote to capture as many good action shots as possible before the racing comes to an end.
After the racing comes to an end, Daniel and his buddies head out on the town to wind down after a day in the sun, dust and noise at the track. Somewhere along the way, Schenkelberg has to sit down and offload all of his photos, click through and find the best ones from the day, do a little editing – or a lot, depending on the look he’s going for – and get them uploaded to his website and delivered to any media outlets that he’s shooting for.
That process, while often a bit boring and repetitive, is just as important as shooting trackside, although it’s also much less fun! Thanks to Daniel for giving everybody a look at what goes on behind the scenes while you’re out there capturing these awesome images!
