Clay Millican Talks Career Year, And His Chase For The Top Fuel Championship
This season has been nothing short of stellar for Drummonds, Tennessee based top fuel driver Clay Millican. Clay, who carries the Speed Society colors on both his car and right on the visor of his helmet, has been right in the middle of the points chase all season long, running much of the year in the 2nd position and battling Steve Torrence for the lead.
NHRA statistician and all around likable guy Lewis Bloom and the beautiful Amanda Busick hooked up with Clay via video chat earlier this week to pick Clay’s brain on the season so far, as well as his outlook for the 4 remaining races in the Countdown to the Championship. As always, the perpetually-smiling Millican was ready to chat, giving Busick and Bloom some great insight into what’s going on inside his head and in his Great Clips/Parts Plus/Strutmasters camp.
For a team that struggled, to put it mildly, to find the winners circle for so long, Millican and crew chief David Grubnic rolled into 2018 coming off their first ever win in the NHRA’s premiere eliminator last season and have put together a solid, consistent year. With two wins on the books and number one qualifying efforts at nearly half of the races in the seasons first 18 races, the team has put up solid numbers all year long and managed to wrangle that horsepower and go rounds on raceday as well.
Clay has always been quick to point to his team when it comes to giving credit for their successes and that remains true as they roll into the third race of the countdown just 3 rounds out of the points lead. His team is a group of young, tenacious and talented guys who have gelled as a unit and put their hotrod squarely in position to make a legitimate run at the title.
With four races remaining, anything can happen, so look for these guys to focus on getting the car down the track quickly and consistently just as they have all season. If they keep up what they’re doing, they’ll be awfully hard to beat!
