Two Main California Highways Might Have No Speed Limit Soon
As your author, I have found myself in a position where I couldn’t help but wonder why speed limits exist in some sport. This is probably quite a common thought that churns through the head of a gearhead when they find themselves on an open highway in the middle of the night. While it’s understandable why lawmakers might not want vehicles hurling down roads at a high rate of speed, we sometimes fantasize that it would be so nice to be able to get to our destination quickly without being inhibited by the thought of a police officer chasing us down. After all, they do it in Germany, right?
For those who live in California and regularly travel the I-5 and Highway 99, this fantasy might soon become a reality. California’s State Senator has begun talks about potentially adding a couple of lanes that have no speed limit. Now, don’t get too ahead of yourself. All of this just seems to be nothing more than talk right now. We know how many different concepts and forms of legislation are spoken about but end up falling by the wayside. However, if this one does come to fruition, perhaps drivers will be able to expect two lanes on each side of these highways that don’t have a speed limit.
Basically, the idea here is that this might actually end up being better for the environment. That’s a tough one to wrap your head around, right? Essentially the concept is that even when cars are traveling at high rates of speed, they are using some sort of efficiency. While the miles per gallon used for an engine revolving at a higher rate might be lower than somebody cruising along at 50 mph, everything is better than the 0 mpg that motorists are getting while they’re sitting still and their vehicles are still burning fuel.
