Parking Lot Lights up as Thousands of Teslas Simultaneously Updated Over Wi-Fi
In this day and age, it seems like we are constantly connected to the internet. Even in ways that we might not actively be thinking about, the power of the internet is impacting us. If we’re not using a mobile device that can give us any information in the world 24/7, even our vehicles have evolved to the point where they are connected to the web.
The concept of cars being connected isn’t even all that uncommon these days. In fact, the vast majority of newer vehicles that one can purchase have the option for internet connectivity. Why do they do this, though?
Well, just like your smartphone, vehicles can receive updates as well. Therefore, in some areas that may need a recall traditionally, the update can be made with the press of a button from the brand responsible for the vehicle.
In addition, perhaps different improvements can happen over the air with our vehicles that are attached to a Wi-Fi network. For example, if somebody wants to upgrade their Tesla to have the autonomous driving capability, they can do so by purchasing the option and having the over the air update applied.
This time, we get to see one of these updates applied in mass and it’s actually pretty impressive. The video appears to showcase the scene from a Tesla storage facility that boasts an entire lot filled with brand new Teslas receiving an update. During an update, their lights flash, indicating that it is in progress. It’s pretty neat to watch the entire group of cars updated all at once as they blink in an orchestra of technology.
The title of the video insists that the update is being carried out by SpaceX’s Starlink service. However, further research turned up that the vehicles have only been able to update with LTE or Wi-Fi with the brand resorting to Wi-Fi only for these updates. In any case, definitely, a cool sight to see!
