Leaked Dealership E-Mail Says GM Unlikely to Fill 2020 C8 Corvette Orders, New Orders Shut Down
We all knew that the C8 Corvette has been incredibly popular. As Chevrolet shifted the axis of what the car is, it drew quite a bit of attention. It really seems like the release of 2020 that people just can’t stop talking about. Apparently, though, it’s so popular that General Motors can’t handle all the demand. It almost seems like a good problem to have but in reality, they might end up losing some sales.
The car offers a generous package at an incredibly competitive price point. With that, it turns out that they literally can’t churn out the C8 quickly enough. A leaked e-mail reports that as of today, March 18, 2020, orders will be completely locked down for the 2020 Chevrolet Corvette. Allegedly, the news comes from a dealer email that got leaked on Corvette Forum.
They say that the sudden move has to do with the 6-week United Auto Workers strike last fall. We wouldn’t be shocked if the backlog is being compounded by the recent shut down of American auto manufacturing plants due to the COVID-19 outbreak.
The e-mail says that this won’t prevent dealers from processing existing sold orders within allocation, nor creating and processing a normal stock order. However, some of these processed orders might not be produced as planned. Instead, the email insists that dealers create a replacement order for 2021 Corvettes.
After a brief hiatus on new orders, Chevrolet will resume taking new orders for the 2021 Corvette in May. This, of course, is all assuming that we’re able to return to a world that looks somewhat normal. As we track the spread of the Coronavirus and all of the accompanying shutdowns, any sort of timeline delivered here would be subject to change.
We wouldn’t be surprised to hear that more stories like this from other automakers follow given the recent shutdowns.
On the bright side, it looks like people are in love with the mid-engined Corvette. Coming into the new generation, this was certainly a big question mark that seems to have been answered.
