Elon Musk Finally Addresses Tesla’s Problems

Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk is well aware of the problems within his company, and he’s on a mission to identify the issues and tackle them head on himself. The automaker’s future rides on its Model 3, the company’s first offering geared toward the everyman, and trying to keep up with the demand has been a major hurdle for the company, despite the factory being built from the ground up to be one of the most efficient in the world.

Musk has found that the focus on automation is part of the problem, however, with some of the robotic assembly machines actually slowing production over their human counterparts. Seeing this, Musk made the difficult decision to actually pull some of the automated elements and complex conveyor belts in order to implement more people into the process, and it seems to have been the right move, with the factory maintaining a production of just over 2,000 vehicles a week since the changes.

Musk was able to identify these changes by spending countless hours on the factory floor, sometimes staying so long that he slept on the couch in the conference room instead of going home to rest. This level of hands-on observation allowed him to pinpoint the areas that kinked the production process and make the changes needed to smooth out the assembly process, bringing production to the level needed.

This is the level of dedication needed from a CEO that seems to be truly devoted to seeing his company flourish and continue to grow. I also personally found it refreshing that Musk was so willing to admit that many of the mistakes were his own and that he didn’t have all of the answers. Humility goes a long way in the public eye, especially when so many CEO’s come across as arrogant and infallible. Musk clearly wants his company to grow and continue to innovate in ways that change the industry top to bottom, and admitting that there are bumps along the way helps him focus on fixing them.
