Can You Use Flex Fuel On A Fueltech ECU

When it comes to building a performance machine, there are a lot of considerations to make. Over the course of a particular build, the person behind it will probably make thousands of small decisions. Its these decisions that can separate the good from the great. On the other hand, though, there are definitely building block decisions that aren’t so small.

Perhaps one of the biggest decisions that someone putting together a performance machine is going to make will be fuel type.

Why is fuel type so important? Naturally, each type of fuel is going to have its own benefits. Higher octane will allow the vehicle to make more power. However, it’s going to be a lot more expensive. After all, someone with a street car isn’t going to want to run race gas all the time.

On another axis, certain areas of the country have different availability of certain fuels. Running with E85 can have massive upside. However, there are pockets around the country where it’s almost impossible to find E85.

With this in mind, we come to the conclusion of a flex-fuel setup. With such a setup, drivers will be able to switch back and forth between different types of fuel. With a sensor, the computer will be able to determine what exactly is in the tank. Even a blend of different types of fuels will work out. With this in mind, a vehicle with a flex-fuel setup will become more versatile, being able to accept more types of fuel all while also having the option to open up and make more power when necessary.

When it comes down to it, how difficult is it to switch over to flex fuel? This time, the folks over at FuelTech take us through the step-by-step that shows what it’s like to make the change with their ECU. – FuelTech USA
