Ford Recalls Super Duty Trucks Due to Seatbelt Fire Hazard
The latest recall from Ford might be one of the strangest that we have seen yet. In turn, it is a rather substantial event, spanning over half of a million trucks in North America. To be more precise, 547,538 Super Duty pickups in North America will be issued a recall.
In this recall, we find that some of the seatbelt equipment has been found to be a fire hazard. It seems like some sort of unlikely scenario that one would find in a Final Destination movie. However, Ford found it a viable enough threat to get the ball rolling on getting it fixed.
The recall has been triggered over a single incident occurring with a pickup truck. However, it looks like a situation where Ford is going to be taking a “better safe than sorry” approach. Apparently, a seat belt pretensioner deployed during a crash situation and caused an issue. Sparks could be generated from the pretensioner switch which would then have the ability to start a fire.
The recall will cover super duty pickups built in Kentucky and sold in North America. The model year range covered is between 2017 and 2019. Furthermore, the recall is only going to be valid for pickups fitted with carpets. While obscure, a fix like this could save a massive headache in the long run. Even though it comes at the cost of fixing over 500,000 trucks, it could potentially save a big lawsuit down the road. In turn, we’re sure that Ford also would like to make sure that their customers are safe with their purchase.
Via The Drive “Ford says that owners of affected vehicles should take them into their local dealership for a cost-free fix. This involves adding foil tape to the carpet and carpet insulation, as well as changing out parts of the sound deadening on the back of the B-pillar trim panel.”
