IMS to Build Dirt Track Inside Oval, Host Race During Brickyard 400 Week

As part of this year’s Brickyard 400, Indianapolis Motor Speedway is building a dirt track on the infield of the massive superspeedway located just outside Indiana’s capitol city.

Truck after truck of dirt is being dumped inside the famed facility to build the dirt oval, which will feature USAC Midgets competing during the days leading up to the Brickyard 400 itself. As the track takes shape, concrete walls and safety fencing will be constructed as well, and we have to assume bleachers will be built to give the spectators a great close up view of the action.

The track will be a quarter mile and will host a two-night main event, the Driven2SaveLives BC39 that honors the late Bryan Clauson, a USAC champion and three time Indianapolis 500 starter who lost his life after an on-track incident in August of 2016. The race will feature a 39 lap main, paying homage to Clauson’s car #39. The winner’s portion of the purse will be a staggering $15,000 making this the richest payout in midget racing. The event will pay out over $70,000 in total, assuring the drivers have plenty of motivation to bring their a-game!

Admission to the event will be between $35 and 50 per ticket, meaning the whole family can enjoy the event without breaking the bank. The schedule will be as follows:

•Wednesday – Gates open for spectators at 3pm, hot lap sessions at 6:30, Heat Races at 7pm and Pursuit Races at 8:30

•Thursday – Gates open for spectators at 3pm, hot lap sessions at 6pm, qualifying races at 7pm and Main Features at 8:30pm

Driven2SaveLives is a campaign launched by Indiana Donor Network to increase awareness of organ, tissue and eye donation. Clauson’s organs were used to save or prolong the lives of five other individuals, and the organs of late Indy Car star Justin Wilson also saved five lives following his fatal crash a year after Clauson’s incident.
